Week 4 Visual Arts Activities

Let’s make our very own family tree!

Continuing with our Inquiry unit based on family, this week I thought we could draw and create our very own  family tree.

Begin the activity by having a discussion with your child about who is in their family.  This tree only stems as far back as grandmother and grandfather.  You can trace your family tree as far as you like, it obviously means that your tree will now have to be made bigger.

To begin your family tree  you will need the following materials:

A large piece of cardboard  to mount your tree. (your choice of colour).

Green cardboard for the tree.

White paper for the names of the family members.

Brown cardboard for the trunk.

Alternatively you may also like to use paint instead of cardboard (your choice)

Scissors

Glue stick

A black highlighter pen to outline your tree.

When you have finished the activity, talk to your child about the positions of each of the family members, and their relationship to your child.

Questions to ask after the activity

Do they  have a better understanding about family members and how they are placed?

Where are you placed on the tree?

What did they learn?

What did they enjoy?

What was less enjoyable?

What could they do differently next time if they were to make another family tree?

I found this really cool clip that you may also like to use to create your family tree!

This clip gives yet another perspective on creating your family tree.  You can make  one or the other or both it’s up to you!

Now let’s get creative Preps!

Please remember to share your beautiful  pieces with me on-line!

I can’t wait to see them!

Also don’t forget the Zart Art Competition!

The wonderful people at Zart Art shop are running an art competition.  Students of any age can enter to win $700 of art supplies.  To enter, you must create an artwork that fits the theme “home is where the art is” The competition will end on the 7th of May.
