Year 1 Visual Arts Week 5 Activities

This week in Visual Arts I thought we would do something slightly different and look at making our very own musical instruments.  After lengthy talks with Ms Penza we thought we’d join both visual arts and performing arts to create sing, danee and make musical instruments for us to enjoy!.

So Let’s get creating Year 1!

Making coin coloured cymbals.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • Two paper plates
  • Gold poster paint or acrylic paint
  • Gold ribbon or pipe cleaner
  • Paint brush
  • Coins or metal washers
  • Pencil
  • Glue gun

Now Let’s look at the steps needed to make our groovy cymbals

1. Prepare two paper plates.

Prepare a pair of paper plates of the same size. We used 8.5″ ones but slightly larger or smaller plates would work as well.

2. Punch a pair of holes.

Using the tip of a pencil, carefully punch a pair of holes at the center of each plate. The distance between the holes should be about 3 inches or approximately as wide as the palm of your hand.

3. Paint the paper plates.

Paint both sides of the paper plates with gold poster paint or acrylic paint.

4. Create a pair of straps.

To make your cymbals’ straps, prepare a pair of gold pipe cleaners or cut a pair of 10-inch long gold ribbon strips.

5. Attach a strap to a cymbal.

Position a cymbal bottom side up. Insert the ends of a strap into the pair of holes.

Tie the ends of the strap together.

6. Tie the ends of the ribbon or pipe cleaner on the flip side of the paper plate.

7. Try on the cymbal.

Try holding the cymbal through the strap. Adjust the length of the strap for a comfortable fit.

8. Add a strap on the other cymbal.

Repeat Steps 5 to 7 for the second cymbal.

9. Glue some coins.

Flip the cymbals so that each plate’s front side is facing up. Use a glue gun to attach small coins or metal washers all around the edges of each plate.

10. Use the cymbals.

Once the glue dries, try banging the cymbals together to make some noise. Now and then some coins may fall off but that’s okay. You can always glue them back later. Enjoy!

If you have time, I have included a Mister Maker youtube clip  for you to make and create your very own Bongo drum check it out and see what you think!!

As Sunday is a special day for remembering mum I thought it would be extra special if mum/grandmother/carer was able to receive a card designed, crafted and made especially by you!

Here are some examples for you to create!

Hope you find these useful these are some of my favourites.

Here are some greetings you may want to use to for mums card.  This is a useful website I found to help you with writing a special message to mum, alternatively you may want to write your very own message.
