Year 3 and 4 Challenge

Choose from either of the below tasks.

Task 1: Keep a toy dry

Create a cover for a plush/ soft toy that will keep it dry when placed underwater.

Must haves:

  • The plush/soft toy should be small enough to submerge it in the sink or a bucket of water.
  • No water is to leak inside your cover.
  • The toy must be submerged underwater for at least 10 seconds.
  • Different covers must be tested to find the best cover.
  • Photographs of the toy after the experiment to prove it was successful.

Task 2: Igloo

Design and create an igloo for a small figurine using just water and salt.

Must have:

  • The igloo is to be made only from water (think about the state of matter the water will need to be).
  • Salt should be used to join the parts of the igloo.
  • The igllo should be between 10 and 20 cm in height and width.
  • Create a timelapse video during the build stage. You could also just video your build from start to finish.

What now?

  1. You need to brainstorm some ideas and draw them on some paper. (take photos so you can share them once you have completed the challenge).
  2. Build your slide from the plans you created. Test your design and make changes where you need to. Remember to redraw your new designs. (Have an adult take photos as use do this- to share once the challenge is complete)
  •  Put all of your photos together in a photo story using video, slideshow or a poster. Bring your model in when we return to onsite learning.
