Year 5 and 6 Challenge
Task 1: Greenhouse effect in a bottle
Design and create a small-scale greenhouse effect in a bottle.
Must have:
- A thermometer must be placed inside the bottle so the temperature can be monitored and recorded.
- A plant must be placed inside the bottle and the bottle must be sealed completely.
- Recreate a hot sun near the bottle and read and record the temperature inside the bottle at set increments.
- The experiment must prove that the greenhouse effect is making the planet warmer.
Before you begin:
- What is the greenhouse effect and how does it make the planet warmer?
- What does this means for the survival of plants.
Task 2: Invent a new animal species
Design and Create an animal made up from adapted features of other animals, which will enable your animal to live in any environment.
Must have:
- Each part pf the super-animalmust be from a different animal.
- Each part should be an image of the actual size.
- The design should fit on an A3 piece of card.
- A name should be created for the new animal
- The adaptations should assist in an aquatic, desert, and forest environment.
- The protytpe must stand freely and be no smaller than 20cm in height and length.
Before you begin:
Find out about different body parts that help animals survive in their environment. Look at animals that currently live in the desert, aquatic and forest environment.

What now?
- You need to brainstorm some ideas and draw them on some paper. (take photos so you can share them once you have completed the challenge).
- Build your slide from the plans you created. Test your design and make changes where you need to. Remember to redraw your new designs. (Have an adult take photos as use do this- to share once the challenge is complete)
- Put all of your photos together in a photo story using video, slideshow or a poster. Bring your model in when we return to onsite learning.
