Comprehension Questions

These are some questions you can ask your child after reading a book to aid their comprehension of the text. You don’t have to ask all questions each time they read a particular book, perhaps ask 3 or 4 different ones each time. Encourage your child to look through the pages to help them answer your questions.

Questions to ask following a ‘Fiction’ book:

  • Can you retell the story?
  • What is the problem in the story? What is the solution?
  • Can you make any connections with this story? Can you make a connection to any other  stories you have read?
  • How do you think the character feels? How do you know they felt that? Can you show me where?
  • Why did the character feel that way?
  • Why did the character do what he/she did in this story?
  • How has the character changed throughout the story?
  • What was the message or lesson the character learnt?
  • What lesson can you learn from the story?
  • What genre is this text? How do you know?
  • Could this story be true? Why/why not?
  • Do you think this book was interesting, humourous or exciting? If so, show me the parts that made you feel that way.
  • Do you think the title is a good title for this book?
  • Did you find the pictures helpful? Why/why not? Show me a picture that really helped you to understand the story better.
  • How did the Author make the book funny or surprising?
  • Is there anything interesting you noticed in this book or in the pictures?
