Oral language is a fundamental basis that enables us to navigate all aspects of our lives. It also lays the foundation for the reading and writing skills that children will develop as they progress through schooling. Oral language is vital to all aspects of their education; in the classroom as they connect with peers and teachers, and throughout their lives as they navigate relationships, the workforce and adulthood. Having a solid oral language basis will support children to become successful readers and strong communicators, as well as build their confidence and overall sense of wellbeing.
The presentation below provides a basic overview of language, the potential difficulties faced by children who struggle with oral language, how oral language and literacy are related, and a brief outline of how we can support the development of oral language for our children.
For activities, games, and tasks that will support your child’s development of oral language, and work on building their knowledge of fundamental language concepts – please access the additional tabs listed under the ‘Oral language’ page.
