Oral language activities

Without a strong oral language basis (e.g. word knowledge, understanding and interpreting spoken language, ability to form appropriate spoken sentences etc.) we may find it difficult to read and understand unfamiliar words/sentences, understand and interpret what is happening in the book or a situation, and communicate our ideas and thoughts effectively to those around us.

While we develop our oral language naturally as we grow and develop; through our interactions and experiences with people and the world around us. We can also play games and do activities that support our oral language skills and learning of new words; some of which we may do throughout the day unknowingly. Examples of these could be: discussing pictures in a book, following instructions, retelling an event that happened at school etc.

Here are some activities you can do at home with your family to support oral language development:

  1. Pizza Party – working on WH questions (see resources tab for instructions)
  2. Billy goats gruff story sequencing activity (see resources tab for instructions)
  3. Where is the apple? – working on locations/concepts (see resources tab for instructions)
  4. colour-matching

You may need some resources for some of these activities – to access these, please click on the “Oral language activity resource” tab and choose the resource you require.
