Fine motor activities are activities that we can do to help develop strong hands and fingers! Fine motor activities also help to develop important physical skills needed for good hand eye coordination. Everyday we do activities that we need a good strong and coordinated fine motor skill to do.
These activities could be:
- Getting dressed – doing up buttons, zips and tying up shoelaces, brushing our teeth (opening up the lid on the toothpaste and squeezing the tube so that we don’t miss our toothbrush)
- Preparing or eating our food – opening up packets and containers so that we can eat, helping our family to cook (cutting up ingredients, measuring ingredients)
- Playing with our favourite toys – Building Lego, dressing up dolls, arts and craft, playing on our device
We do so many things each day that use our fine motor skills. It’s always important to make sure that we keep doing activities that help us to keep these skills strong. As we get older, we need to be able to do these activities for longer each day.
One day, you could grow up to be a tradesperson, you will need to have lots of good fine motor skills for that job! Maybe you’d like to be a teacher, you’ll need to have good fine motor skills to write on the whiteboard, to do lots of typing when it’s report time! There are many other jobs that you could do that you will use your fine motor skills in.
Here are some fine motor activities that you can do at home. You can do them by yourself or you can do them with another member of your family. Maybe you can choose to do some of these activities when you have a break between doing your school work!
