Year 5 – Kicking, Handball, Marking, Picking-up a Ground Ball and Bouncing

- Grab your footy and select a good spot where you can practice these skills in your backyard. If you don’t have a footy, use another ball
- Do some jogging on the spot for a few minutes and a few exercises from week1 to warm-up. Aim for at least 15 minutes
- Practice your kicking as shown in the video. First work on your preferred leg, but don’t forget to work on your other leg too. You can try kicking to self, to a family member, or through a goal. You can also set a target and see if you can make the ball hit that target
- Practice your handballing as shown in the video. It’s very important that you handball with your right and left hand. Start with handballing to self, then progress to handballing to a family member. If you are practising by yourself, then you can handball to a brick wall outside, so you can then catch the ball once it bounces off the wall
- For marking the ball, start by throwing the ball to self or bounce it off a wall and mark it in your chest. Then try to toss the ball up high and mark it overhead. You can also ask a family member to help you with this skill by throwing or handballing the ball to you. Ask them to start near you and move away as you progress. Try jumping up before marking the ball high overhead
- To practice picking-up the ball, place the ball on the ground a few steps away from you, run to it and pick-up as shown in the video. You can then jog back and place the ball in it’s spot again. Repeat this a few times. Then progress to picking-up a moving ball. You can do this by rolling the ball in front of you and picking it up before it stops, or by asking a family member to roll the ball towards you
- Practice your bouncing as shown in the video. Remember to always start easy, bouncing the ball while stationary, then while walking, then jogging. As always, try using your non dominant hand too
- You can also make up your own drills using a combination of the skills you have practised. Example: Start with the ball in your hands, jog and bounce, jog towards a brick wall, handball against the wall, mark in your chest, kick the ball low on the ground, run to it, pick it up, toss high up, jump and mark, kick through a goal.
- Finish with some cooling down exercises from week 1 or 2
